Photography Departures Have Us Looking Forward to Next Fall Already

AUTHOR Daniel Andino

November was an unforgettable month for Ecoventura and our Galapagos-based Specialty Focus on Photography Departures program.

Those joining us aboard our luxury yacht, the MV Origin, on one of the two departures, enjoyed the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to photograph the famed ecology of the Galapagos Islands – all under the guidance of Guayaquil-born professional photographer Mauricio Torres.

Such a good time was had by all that we wanted to share with you a recap of our memorable event in the form of a photo essay. Read below to learn more about this month’s special experience, some photography pro tips from the masterful wildlife artists Mauricio Torres and other photographers, and how you can get on board for our next photography focused cruise, scheduled for Fall 2019.

The Opportunity of a Lifetime

Visitors aboard the MV Origin for this year’s photography departure were first treated to an optional fundamentals class, during which they were able to learn some wildlife photography basics from Mauricio. Among the topics covered was lighting, and how to make the best use of it naturally. Journeyers also received a guide of the island and its wildlife to aid their exploration.

As our guests explored, Mauricio surreptitiously snapped photos of their efforts. The reason for this became apparent in the end, as we were treated to a slideshow of the best photos from the week at our farewell gathering, all accompanied by music! Of course, every visitor departed with professional photos of themselves and their companions, commemorating their incredible week, courtesy of Mauricio Torres and Ecoventura.

Tips from the Pros

In the past, we have been fortunate to have wildlife photographer travel with us.  In addition to enhancing the experience of our guests, Renato Granieri shared with us some pro tips for future visitors to the island to consider when capturing their own memories.

“When traveling to the Galapagos, you may be wondering what type of professional camera to bring. Our photo experts and past guests don’t think a telephoto is necessary.  A 1200mm, for instance, requires a lot of setup –  tripod, etc. – and there really isn’t any time for that on these trips. Getting great shots in the Galapagos is like shooting a wedding: things happen fast and then they are over or go away.”   Eduardo Gato Gonzalez

“Comfort is very important when traversing the landscape.”

“One guest who traveled with us recently noted that what is important is a really fast lens – something with an f/2.8 or less – and a body like a Canon 5D Mark III or superior.”

“Mauricio captured some magnificent shots and traveled with a 24-70mm lens for landscapes, and a 70-200 with A x 2 extension for long shots and portraits, and said that was sufficient.”

“He noted he would have loved to have a 500mm lens, but a 1200mm would be overkill. He also suggests adding a 100 macro lens for plants, insects, and lizards.”
