Quito’s new airport is set to open on February 20, 2013. The new larger “Mariscal Sucre International Airport” will be able to accommodate flights from more distant destinations and make Quito more accessible. The airport is located in the town of Tababela, about 20 km east of Quito. Travel time from the airport into Quito will range from 45 minutes or more in rush hour. Hotels in Quito will no longer offer complimentary airport shuttle service and travel time and transfer expense will increase.
Ecoventura is recommending their passengers travel via the coastal city of Guayaquil (GYE) for short or one night stays to avoid the hassle - at least until the highways are finished and hotels closer to the airport open – which is expected to take at least one year.
